Standard vs. 3D Embossing Folders

Standard vs. 3D Embossing Folders by Kathleen Rosenfield September 2022

Hey Stampbuddies, I mentioned card buffets in last week’s newsletter so a just wanted to show you a few cards that were on the menu at last Saturday’s buffet! All together there were 8 to choose from. We did some embossing with the big shot and that is why I wrote this week’s Q&A on embossing folders.

This Week’s Q&A: Embossing Folders

The Embossing Folders in the Annual Catalog are on pgs. 176-77. Some of the names include 3D but others don’t. What’s the difference?

Folders without the ‘3D’ in the name are considered standard folders; as a result, they create a uniform embossed impression. The 3D folders are made of a thicker material which therefore gives a deeper, more detailed impression. Standard folders require 2 embossing plates and 3D folders require only 1 embossing plate.

Sometimes when you run the 3D embossing folder and plate through your machine, it is not thick enough to get an imprint so Stampin’ Up and also other companies have made a blue plate that is a bit thicker and will give you that deeply etched embossing that is so stunning with the 3D folders. Depending upon which machine you have, you might need to play around a little bit with the plates.

How to use an embossing folder:

Place a piece of cardstock inside the embossing folder and make a “sandwich” with the embossing plates based on weather the folder is standard or 3D. Next, run it through your embossing machine. The most important tip is, above all, don’t force the sandwich through the embossing machine. Stop and try to make the sandwich thinner!

P.S.: Don’t miss the three new folders on page 81 of the July – December 2022 Mini Catalog.Class
